The first dedicated Lacrosse card sets date to about the same time period as the first hockey cards do – circa 1910. Produced by the Imperial Tobacco Company, there were 3 sets of cards from this era. It is important to point out that when each of the first 3 sets were eventually cataloged, an error was made in the order and the eventual number that was assigned to it. More specifically, the set that was produced in 1911 actually received the American Card Catalog designation of “C59”, while the set that was produced and released prior to it in late 1910 received the later American Card Catalog designation of “C60”. At first glance it would seem quite odd – however, once you review these cards, it can be quite understandable as to how this could have occurred.
1.
1910: A 98 card set that possesses an American Card Catalog designation of “C60”.
2.
1911: A 100 card set that possesses an American Card Catalog designation of “C59”.
3.
1912: A 50 card set that possesses an American Card Catalog designation of “C61”.
I have read many articles about the initial 2 sets, that were produced and distributed by the Imperial Tobacco Company of Canada – specifically that the 1911 set is actually a reprint of the 1910 set with just two cards added – numbering # 99 and 100. I have found this not be entirely the case. Yes, it is true that for the teams from Ottawa and Quebec, the fronts are identical. However, for the remaining seven teams, the identical nature is limited to the portraits, leaving the distinguishing factors for these cards as the background color of each front. The backs of each year are quite different for all 9 teams, with the inaugural version of 1910 having a much cleaner or “plain” back than its subsequent counterparts of 1911. .

The 98 card set that was produced and given out one at a time as a free premium within each cigarette pack was the initial set produced by the Imperial Tobacco Company, ITC, in 1910 and became known as set C-60. The front of each card shows the player's name, team name, card number and a color picture of the player. The back of each card also has the player's name and the playing history of the athlete as well as some additional information.
